Each
30-minute music therapy class uses music and the elements of music to
help students attain targeted goals, with the ultimate goal of having a
successful class experience. Goals may include increasing attention
span, attention to task, auditory awareness, communication, fine and
gross motor skills, self-esteem, self-expression, self-help skills,
sensory integration, socialization, spatial awareness, speech, ease of
transitions and visual awareness.
Each
class includes a greeting song using name identification, fine motor
activities using known songs, gross motor activities, musical stories,
instrument playing, relaxation/stress management techniques and a
closing song. A brief written summary is given to each student at the
conclusion of the 6-week session, including the outcome of the targeted
goal for each student, comments, suggestions and recommendations.
Licensed
music therapist, Angela Falco, will help autistic children find an
outward expression for their inner worlds.
Prerequisite: Parents/caregivers must complete a questionnaire and
return it to the Wilmington Branch prior to the first week of class.
