Message from the Director

Welcome to Autism Delaware’s newly revised website. This website has been in the works for a year and is designed to meet your requests for more and better information about autism and the resources available in Delaware. As part of this effort, we have completely updated our Parent Packet, which is both online and available through a CD.

The Parent Packet provides information about what to do when you learn your child has autism, schools and services in Delaware, as well as lists of parent recommended services and physicians. We also invite you to write to us with your recommendations and experiences with the service and educational community that we can share.

Another key service that we offer is parent mentoring. We now have two offices serving the entire state, so a parent mentor is available on each site. We encourage any parent or family member to call either Heidi Mizell in the New Castle office, or Dafne Carnright in the Milton office with your questions and concerns. At Autism Delaware, we never want a person with autism or a family member to feel alone so we offer many opportunities to connect with us and with each other. We are here for you – to provide information, support, and opportunity.

During the past 18 months, the Lower Delaware Autism Foundation has joined with us to be one voice for autism in Delaware. Since our merger we have opened a new office in Milton and we are expanding POW&R, our nationally recognized adult service program to Kent and Sussex Counties;  increasing recreational opportunities for children and families across the state, actively advocating for insurance reform, and doing our best to make better lives for our members. We continue to have plans for the future, and are looking to develop clinical services and a residential program. These are ambitious goals for a small organization, and we need your help to make it happen. We encourage you to become an active member and to help us with our many programs and activities to make life better for our loved ones with autism.

Sincerely,

 Theda Ellis
